Scott Ford, DVM, Diplomate ABVP-Avian
Dr. Ford caught the “bird bug” as a teenager and was pursuing a degree in ornithology when, in 1989, he learned of the relatively new field of avian medicine. He worked in raptor centers in Alaska and Washington to earn the experience he needed for vet school. He graduated from Washington State University in 1998 and practiced for four years at a small animal, avian, and exotic hospital in Washington. He also volunteered veterinary services to a local wildlife shelter. He then returned to Alaska as the staff veterinarian at the Alaska Raptor Center for two years and later ran his own ambulatory service for birds and exotics in northwestern Washington and assisted Washington Fish and Wildlife in eagle management. From 2004-2008, he practiced with Dr. Brian Speer at the Medical Center for Birds in California. In 2006 he achieved board certification in avian medicine and surgery within the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He became an avian medicine consultant on the Veterinary Information Network in 2007. From 2008-2009 Dr. Ford practiced at the Bird and Exotic Clinic of Seattle. Dr. Ford started Avian Specialty Veterinary Services of Alaska in 2007 as a way to continue doing working with wildlife and pet birds in Alaska. At the end of 2009 he began to devote all of his time to ASVSA and expanded to include several clinics in Washington and field work and technical consulting all over North America.
